Birdwatcing Tour in Hortobágy National Park
Description
The Hortobágy National Park is one of the best known, yet mysterious regions in Hungary. The park is enjoying World Heritage status, normally closed to the general public, but with the relevant permission it is still possible to go on a guided tour and visit some reserved parts of Hortobágy. The seemingly barren, scorched “puszta” (grassland) is home to many birds. Marshes are used as roosting and feeding sites by many nesting and migrant birds. Large numbers of Black-headed Gulls, Purple Herons, Little Bitterns, Great White Egrets and Bitterns nest in old reedbeds. For waders and other water birds, fish ponds are also an ideal habitat and food supply, holding 40 breeding and over 200 migrating species. For example 200 pairs of the strictly protected Spoonbill nest in fish ponds. There is always an ornithology expert accompanying the groups, who helps the quests explore the rare and protected species without interfering with the flora und fauna of the nature conservation areas.

The species listed in the European Red Book require very special precautions. Occasionally the guests may have to walk kilometers to find rare birds. Participants should bring along not only comfortable boots but also rubber boots, mackintosh and rucksack. The daily program may vary according to weather conditions and nature conservation regulations.
