|
On this tour you will roam the Southern land of
River Danube in Hungary from Budapest to Mohács and the countryside of Southern TransDanubia with Mediterranean like climate
between the hills of Villány and Mecsek. Beside the world heritage sites
of Budapest and Pécs (Buda Castle District and the view of the Danube
banks at Budapest and Early Christian Necropolis of Pécs) you
will visit other historical places, like thousand-year-old
archiepiscopal seat, Kalocsa and Mohács, the field of tragic
battle - now a memorial park - where Turks crushed Hungarians in 1526.
Hungary was liberated only 150 years later, after victory Prince Eugene of
Savoy’s at Zenta in 1697. You will visit the statue of the strategic genius of
Habsburgs in the Buda Castle and his baroque castle at Ráckeve. You can
still find many relics from the Turkish age; perhaps the best-known monuments
are the thermal baths and Gül Baba Türbe in Buda, the mosques and the minaret
in Pécs and the Malkocs bey mosque in Siklós. You will visit old castles,
the famous castle of Buda, the castle of Siklós, which is one of the best
preserved castles in Hungary and the Barbican of Pécs, also with round bastion.
During the tour you will cycle through historical wine region Villány-Siklós, where you can taste the excellent red wines in the
wine cellars. You can enjoy the delights of the spicy fish-soups of Hungarian
cousin, made from fish of river Danube and cooked with paprika in
„bogrács" (cauldron) in Baja restaurants. Near Siklós you can
relax in the thermal water of spa Harkány. You will have many
possibilities to visit the museums and exhibition, explore the cultural
heritage of land where famous poets, composers, musicians and artist lived and
worked. This is especially true in case of Pécs, the two thousand years
old town, which is the cultural capital of Europe in 2010.

1st day:
Budapest
|
|

Individual arrival. Depending
on arrival time, visit the
sights of city: Váci
Street, St. Stephen`s Cathedral,
Heroes Square , the Castle
District, Gellért Hill and the bridges of Danube.

2nd day: Csepel Island
|

Cycling out from the city on the bicycle road leads through Batthyány square, Gellért square, Lágymányosi bridge,
along the Danube to Csepel Island. The legendary "Csepel" bicycles have been made here in the Weiss Manfred Bicycle Factory since 1928. Arriving at Ráckeve, the paradise of the lovers of fishing , you will visit the sight of village: the Serbian Orthodox church with Byzantine wall paintings dating from
XV.th century and the famous Savoy

Castle, was built for Duke Eugene of Savoy, after he defeated the Turks in the battle of Zenta in 1697, ending a 150-year Turkish rule of Hungary. Accommodation in Ráckeve.

3rd day: Ráckeve - Solt

From Ráckeve ride on the left side of the Csepel Island, along the
Old-Danube. When you pass the Tass flood gate, it is worth to make a detour to
Szalkszentmárton and visit the Memorial House of Sándor Petőfi, the popular poet
of the Hungarian War of Independence. In Solt-Révbérpuszta there is an
Equestrian Center. If you arrive in
good time, then you can join to a horse show and taste the local

dishes and wines accompanied by folk music. In the garden of small farm museum you will find native animal breeds - racka sheep, grey cattle, mangalica pigs. In Crafstmen's house and garden you can buy the masterpieces of folk handicrafts. Accommodation in Solt.

4th day: Solt - Kalocsa

Leaving Harta and Dunapataj, you can make
a 5 km detour to the Szelidi Lakes; the salt
lake was formed from an old branch of he
Danube. After a bath in warm thereaputic
salt water and relaxing in the sandy beach,
follow your ride through the small villages
or on the dike along the Danube to Foktő, then turn towards Kalocsa.

Kalocsa is a thousand-year-old diocesan town, its archbishop Astrik delivered the crown from the Pope to István, the first Hungarian King. Visit the two major buildings at historical center of Kalocsa, the Archbishop's Cathedral, was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries and the baroque Archbishop's Palace with the frescos

of Franz Anton Maulbertsch. Beside its historical building the town is famous throughout the world from its paprika, embroidery and high-quality folk-art. It is worth to see the Folk Art Museum and Paprika Museum too. Accommodation in Kalocsa.

5th day: Kalocsa - Baja
|
(50 km)
|
|
Cycle from Kalocsa through Gerjen, then
Fajsz on the dike until the undercrossing of
M9 bridge. Follow along the Danube to Baja.
Alternatively you
can cross the bridge here, and proceed
along the Gemenc forest on a longer
way (+11 km), while you arrive back to
Danube at Baja. Baja is a picturesque town at the confluence of Danube and Sugovica rivers with many small islands. The multi-racial town is keeping the cultural traditions of Hungarian, German, Serbian, Croatian inhabitants.

Visit the Holy Trinity Square and observe the architectural variety of building and old churches. Walk on the natural riverbanks, Petőfi Island and Sugovica beach. Baja is often called as the capital of fish soup, you should not leave without enjoy the gastronomic experiences! Accommodation in Baja.

6th day: Baja - Mohács
|

From Baja you will cycle along
Danube into Mohács in a nice
natural environment. Mohács lays
at the southern part of Danube in
Hungary. Cross the Danube by
ferry to Mohács. The town is
famous about “Busó Halloween”, a
merry carnival to bury the
winter and welcome the spring

7th day: Mohács-Villány

You will cycle from Mohács on
the dike along Danube to Kölked.
Do not miss to visit the Stork
Museum of village! On the road
to Villány is worth to stop at
the Historical Memorial Site. |

It was designed by contemporary architect, György Vadász. The site commemorates the 'Mohács tragedy', the battle in 1526, when the Hungarian army was defeated by the forces of the Ottoman Empire and great part of Hungary came under
Turkish occupation. After Mohács Hungary was torn into three parts.

8th day: Villány-Siklós-Harkány-Pécs
|

On the road to Siklós you
will cycle across the
hills towards the Palkonya
and Villánykövesd cellar rows,
represents an exceptional
treasure of folk architecture.
In Palkonya you can find one of
the finest round churches of
Hungary.

Stop at Siklós and visit the medieval castle, with well- preserved round tower bastion, valuable old frescos in the chapel and an excellent view of the land from the roof terrace of the Spanish bastion. Near the castle you can find the pentagonal mosque of Malkocs bey from Turkish era. You can taste the delicious products of traditional confectionery in the center of old town.

The next station is the spa and open-air bath Harkány
(32 km), where you can relax in the health-improving medicinal water before you proceed to Pécs.
If the 70 km ride would be
too long for you today, you can
cycle back
to Villány on a shorter
way (18km) and travel by an
afternoon train to Pécs (50
minutes).

Pécs is a World Heritage location with many attraction, historical buildings, cultural treasures. One day may be not enough to visit the numerous interesting sights of city, like the Early Christian burial chambers, Barbican, 11th century cathedral, Bishop's Palace, Turkish mosques, minaret, fountains and museums of Zsolnai, Vasarely, Csontváry by walking on the famous Széchenyi Square, Király
Street, Káptalan Street and Jókai
Square.
